Growing Broccoli – Marathon

Late Summer and Autumn broccoli, such as the Marathon Broccoli variety, are very easy to grow from seed as well as being tasty and nutritious.

Sow individual broccoli seeds in small degradable pots from late Spring or directly in final position in may. They should be planted 30 cm apart. The Marathon stem variety will produce lots of the side shooting stems after the main flowering head has been cut, and will keep producing more and more if the plant is kept well watered and fed.

We recommend sowing in succession between April and May to spread the harvest time from August to October. Broccoli should be picked when a good tight head has been formed, and before the yellow flowers start to emerge.

During prolonged, hot & dry weather the flowers heads can bolt into flower - cut the main head as soon as possible, which will encourage lots of tasty side shoots to form.

Pests

Broccoli is a brassica and so must be protected with butterfly netting from April to October.  The young plants are also vulnerable to slugs and snails.
